Eastern Neoclassical: A Blend of Chinese and Western Elements

A Unique and Elegant Villa Designed by Jung Yuan Hou

According to the client who returned to Taiwan after many years lived in the United States, they loved the fresh, bright, spacious American decor and spacious front and backyard, hoping to enjoy the leisure of living in this 280.1 m2 villa on the mountainside. Therefore, the design team plans the public and private sectors separately on the first and second floor and harmoniously combined the aesthetics and functions to properly utilize the area and create a comfortable and elegant neoclassical space.

The Eastern Neoclassical design by Jung Yuan Hou showcases a unique blend of Chinese and Western elements in a residential space. The designer took inspiration from the client's love for the fresh, bright, and spacious American decor, and incorporated it into this 280.1 m2 villa on the mountainside. The design team carefully planned the layout, separating the public and private areas on different floors, to create a harmonious and functional space.

One of the standout features of this design is the master bedroom, which utilizes a double-sided cabinet and oriental sliding doors to create a sense of privilege and separation between the sleeping and study areas. The cabinet serves multiple purposes, with one side dedicated to a TV, and the other side featuring a hotel-style minibar and display cabinet. This combination of functionality and aesthetics is a testament to the designer's attention to detail.

The overall design of the villa combines functionality and aesthetics seamlessly. The bedside wall of the master bedroom is adorned with a dark purplish color, while the cloakroom is cleverly hidden behind a camouflage door, maintaining the overall wall surface and showcasing the designer's ingenuity in planning every detail.

In terms of materials and technology, the design team utilized a range of building materials such as stone, leather, iron, paint, wood flooring, mirror glass, titanium plate, and moisture-proof plates. They also incorporated woven blankets, imported wallpapers, and imitation marble tiles to enhance the elegance of the space and fulfill the client's American style dreams. The neoclassical base of the design is integrated with oriental style elements, such as the living room chaise lounge and standing lamp, the custom-made mirror wall in the dining hall, and the metal chandelier, creating a beautiful harmony between Chinese and Western aesthetics.

The villa spans across 280.1 m2 and features a spatial layout that includes an entrance, living room, dining room, wet and dry kitchen, guest bedroom, study room, a master bedroom, two bedrooms, three bathrooms, and three terraces. The design team paid careful attention to the layout, creating a layered effect in the guest dining hall by combining furniture with the main wall. They also incorporated a two-kitchen system, with the dry kitchen separated from the wet kitchen, to cater to modern usage habits and effectively block oil fumes.

The design of the villa promotes interaction and functionality. The entrance hall has been re-adjusted to increase storage space and create a semi-enclosed space that adds privacy. The dining hall ceiling height has been extended to cleverly connect the space lines, and hanging lamps have been used to distinguish between different areas. The open dry kitchen offers a connecting feeling to people interacting in the space.

The Eastern Neoclassical design by Jung Yuan Hou was realized in Wenshan District, Taipei, Taiwan. The design team conducted extensive research to create a space that embodies elegance and sophistication. The main color palette of beige is complemented by elegant gold textures and the client's favorite peacock blue tone. The dining hall's wall is intertwined with Oriental custom texture, while Western-style line shape mirrors and crystal lamps reflect a gorgeous style.

The design process presented several challenges, including the redistribution of space to maximize usage. The use of two symmetrical doors hidden in the kitchen wall allows for entry to the wet kitchen and guest bedroom. This special two-entryway design provides flexibility for the client to use the space as needed. The composition of the original space has been improved to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements, creating an exclusive reading area and tea cabinet on the second floor.

The Eastern Neoclassical design by Jung Yuan Hou is a bright and elegant representation of a blend of Chinese and Western elements. With its beige-based tone, embellished with gold accents, and attention to detail, this design offers a living experience that is elaborate yet not extravagant. The Oriental custom texture intertwined with Western-style mirrors and crystal lamps in the dining room creates a unique and stunning ambiance. The bedroom's turquoise Oriental pattern of mountains, combined with the client's favorite peacock blue window curtains, creates a harmonious flow throughout the space.
